The Owlets - Reception

 

Children are admitted in accordance with the School's admission arrangements. Proper provision is given to the children to learn in a way that is appropriate to their age and stage of development.

The initial priority is to provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere combined with a sense of order and security. Once children feel 'at home' in the classroom situation and also realise the acceptable boundaries of behaviour, a fruitful process, in acquiring many of the necessary skills and concepts they are to encounter throughout their school career, can begin.

By the end of the Reception Year, many children will have already learned to read and have had lots of opportunities to share books with adults. They will have begun to write simple stories by themselves and to develop a good understanding of number and shape.

Another important lesson to be learned is how each child becomes part of a large group or class in all that that means. Sharing, caring and being responsible for your own actions and arriving at a reasonable level of independence are all achievable aims.

The Owlets' Curriculum Overview-

Spring Term

  •  

Language & Literacy

  • Reinforcing the linking of sounds to letters: recognising, recalling and forming letters of the alphabet
  • Further development of phonics: using known letters and sounds to read and blend words phonetically
  • Development of reading skills and an enjoyment of books: including individual, group and shared reading activities, using fiction, poetry, nursery rhymes and non fiction texts; regular practise with key words.
  • · Writing: regular opportunities to practise emergent writing through play; shared and guided writing, including writing labels, captions, lists, letters and books.

Numeracy

  • · Counting, comparing and ordering numbers: using number names in order and counting everyday objects reliably; recognising and beginning to write, record and order numerals; comparing numbers and saying a number which lies between two given numbers.
  • · Adding and subtracting: beginning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting; to find one more or less than a number from 1-10; to begin to relate addition to counting on and combining two sets; to begin to relate subtraction to 'taking away'.
  • · Measures, including time: to use language such as more or less, longer or shorter, heavier or lighter to make a direct comparison of two quantities; to know the days of the week in order.
  • · Money and real life problems: sorting coins- 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p

Knowledge and understanding of the World

  • · to recognise that different materials have different properties; some fabrics keep you warmer than others; to investigate materials and objects; to investigate by using the senses
  • · to observe and find out about the natural world; to look closely at differences and change; plant growth
  • · developing key board skills; the uses of everyday technology; using a programmable toy; to use simple programs on a computer; to perform simple functions on ICT apparatus
  • · local buildings; homes in the past; junk buildings

Creative Development

  • · we will work creatively using a variety of mediums, exploring colour, texture and form, through printing, painting and collage
  • · explore a range of musical instruments and recognise how sounds can be changed ; sing simple songs from memory; recognise simple sound patterns

Physical Development

  • · using large equipment in the out door area; to develop an awareness of space and others
  • · development of fine motor skills using a range of small and large equipment
  • · to handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • · Activities to encourage independence, concentration, confidence and social skills such as sharing and turn taking.

  • counting and number: using number names in order and counting everyday objects reliably; recognising, writing and ordering numerals
  • shape, space and measure: recognising, naming and describing 2D shapes; sorting and matching; development of mathematical language e.g. more/less, bigger/smaller; the passing of time

Knowledge and understanding of the World

Creative Development

We will work creatively using a variety of mediums, exploring colour, texture and form, through printing, painting and collage

  • manipulate materials and objects by squeezing, pulling, pushing, pinching etc.
  • using large equipment in the out door area

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Activities to encourage independence, concentration, confidence and social skills such as sharing and turn taking.
