Gardening Club 2010

Due to the building work happening near our garden, Gardening Club has temporarily moved to two large planters in our playground. Thankfully two things haven't changed, Dr Montague and Mrs Stopps are still overseeing our little buds!

Wednesday 9th June

While Dr Montague is having a well deserved holiday abroad, I carried out his lesson plan for today, with Mrs Knight to assist.

We began by admiring the strawberry planter that the eco team had received as a reward for our school from generation green. Dr Montague had planted the strawberry plants from the "old" school garden during half term and it was looking magnificent. We expect strawberries to eat in about a week - and lots of them! We also noted how quickly our courgettes, runner and French beans had grown, now they are in larger pots.

Then we harvested lettuces, rocket and radishes and children packed them away in bags to take home for tea. The vegetables looked very healthy and tasty.

It was now time to prick out the calendula plants and the children carefully removed the small plants and put them into the compost filled modules, that Dr Montague had prepared for us. They took great care over this and then put the containers back in the mini greenhouse.

Finally we needed to give all of our flowers and vegetables a really good watering, so they would continue growing so well.

We really enjoyed gardening club today, but look forward to Dr Montague's return next week!

19th May - all of our seeds are growing really well, helped by regular watering from the children.  We examined our beans and courgettes growing in the mini-greenhouse, and many were showing signs of growth. Everybody potted up a tomato plant, and tied it to a small cane to help it grow tall and straight.  We are growing the varieties "Welsh Farmer Law's", "Silvery Fir Tree", "Auntie Madge" and "Gardeners' Delight".  These are being watered regularly as well.

26th May - It was exceptionally hot this weekend, and all of the seeds planted in the small pots were transplanted into big pots.  These were the runner beans "Bert's Best Bean", climbing French bean "Cherokee Trail of Tears", and courgettes "Green Bush".  We had fun pricking out the germinated pot marigolds so that they would not be crowded together as they grow.  Everybody took home their own tomato plant to grow on at home.

Thursday 5th May 2010

5th and 12th May.  Both groups have more or less filled their planters with seeds and radishes, lettuces, rocket, chicory, beans, and flowers are now growing.  Both planters have been covered with netting to stop blackbirds from disturbing the soil and digging the plants up.  They are looking for worms for the nest they have in the hedge.  We are using the small plastic covered growhouse to see pot marigolds grow, and we will be pricking these out when they have germinated.  Everyone had a choice of growing seeds of bush marrows, climbing French beads, or runner beans in little pots, and we will be potting these on into bigger pots when they have come up.  As it is hot and dry, the beds and the pots in the growhouse must be watered regularly.

Thursday 28th April 2010

Group two -  right hand planter.
This was the first meeting of our other group of gardeners.  Again lots of seeds were planted, mixed flowers, rocket, lettuce, radish, chicory, spinach and  four borage plants found on the main school garden.  We watered the soil well, and we are waiting to see what will germinate.  It is an exciting time seeing what will grow!

21st April
Group one - left hand planter.
Today was our first gardening club meeting.  Over the winter two planters have been made by Mr. Ash, and have been filled with soil and compost ready for planting. We planted lots of seeds, mixed flowers, red broad beans, rocket, lettuce, radish, and chicory.  This should give us a nice colourful display and plenty of salad to eat.  We have moved the hosepipe, as it is important to keep the soil in the planters moist so that the seeds can germinate.
